It serves as the economic, cultural, transportation, and commercial hub of the northeastern region. As of February 2024, Shenyang boasts 45 universities, numerous museums, libraries, and tourist attractions.

The economic development of Shenyang is primarily driven by its industrial sector, with the service and agricultural sectors also playing significant roles. Industrial development is the economic mainstay of Shenyang, covering a variety of fields including machinery manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, electronic information, steel, and petrochemicals. Shenyang is a crucial industrial manufacturing base in China, hosting several well-known large state-owned enterprises and multinational companies that have established factories there, such as China First Automobile Works (FAW) and Shenyang Machine Tool Co., Ltd. The automobile manufacturing industry is one of the pillar industries of Shenyang, with a number of renowned domestic and international automobile production and auxiliary enterprises having set up production bases in the city.

Shenyang is a nationally renowned historical and cultural city and one of the first Chinese cities to be recognized as an excellent tourist city. It has over 400 extant ancient sites, including ancient ruins, ancient cities, ancient tombs, ancient buildings, beacon towers, defensive walls, and historical and revolutionary monuments. The Imperial Palace, Fuling Mausoleum, and Zhaoling Mausoleum have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
